Trump Election Not Like December 2014

Clinton lost partly because she neglected too big a segment of American voters and thought a bit like she did in 2008 that 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was hers for the taking. That was a big contrast with Trump who was very efficient in appealing to the reptilian brains of enough voters who don't understand for example that his proposed 15% flat tax is going to hurt them the most. These voters seem to be oblivious to how Reaganomics increase US debt from one to four trillion dollars in twelve years back in the 1980s. And what threw America into its worst recession in almost eight decades in 2008.

So that's very different from what happened here in 2014. It looks a lot more like the June 1982 elections when voters were not sophisticated enough to compensate for the lack of relevant information to take the decision that was in their best interests. But we've become increasingly smarter since then as a careful study would show. Intelligent enough to reject the wicked plan of a scheming trio two years ago.

And the race is quite tight. Although Sandy helped Barack Obama get Mayor Bloomberg's endorsement. Colin Powell will also be voting for the Democrat candidate just like he did four years ago. The economy seemed to be doing better after eight years of irresponsible policies by W. which killed 9 million jobs.

The New Yorker has issued its voting recommendations. Americans are grappling with broadly the same issues that we are confronting here in Dodoland.

The first of three. They will be discussing domestic policy and veteran Jim Lehrer will moderate the hostilities. Starts at 9PM EST which means 5AM in Dodoland. So set your alarm.

Barack is going into this debate with a 4% lead over Mitt and on track to be the first $1 billion Presidential candidate this month. Or about 10% more than the GOP's total. Costly campaign, eh? Both sides will then buy huge amounts of advertisement time and space to try to make a difference on Tuesday November 6.

So says an interesting 3-part article by Carl Pope. And Barack Obama who will announce what he essentially intends of doing if he gets a second mandate in November when he delivers his annual report card to Congress tomorrow is expected to address these issues.

Indeed, the media has reported that the thrust of a second Obama term will revolve around education, manufacturing and innovation. Which is essentially what Steve Jobs told him he should work on back in October 2010 in order to avoid ending up as a one-mandate President.

He's been one busy President. Jumped in the worst crisis since the Great Depression and barely managed to avoid the US defaulting. And the world is becoming increasingly multi-polar with Chindia to play a larger role in many spheres.

While Obama's first budget is aiming to stop the increasing inequality that has been characterising America since the Reagan days, Sithanen has been doing just the opposite here and shows no sign of slowing down.

Here are three facts to consider how he's been giving relatively more to the rich while impoverishing the middle-class and the poor. The first one is by ending progressive taxation in 2006. That in itself is a highly regressive move and its unfairness has been confirmed by an independent study. It's like a reverse tax revolution: the rich and super-rich hitting the jackpot. The next one is by clobbering a majority of our citizens with too high a rate of inflation. And the final one by not spending public money to solve a few of the problems that seriously exacerbate the "inequality of living conditions" (thanks Krugman!) of too many of our citizens: traffic congestion, non-interrupted water supply and non-competitive energy prices to name just three.

And of course, all of these combine in a vicious manner to bring the fabric of our society closer to tearing.

World Could Soon Love America Again

If Barack Obama, who today signed the executive orders to have Guantanamo Prison closed within the next twelve months, makes good on a few other of his electoral pledges.

And don't be surprised to soon see something imaginable before last Nov 4th: America happily playing their favourite sport against the country which actually plays it better than them in Havana with Fidel Castro and Obama exchanging some good jokes about past diplomatic relations or lack thereof between their two countries. That would certainly bring back happy memories of a Pierre Trudeau laughing with the same Castro about accusations that he smuggled arms into Cuba on his kayak.
