India in Overtaking Mood, Again

It's now the fourth biggest economy in the world in dollar terms after have said TTFN to Japan. Expect the gentle elephant to overtake Germany around October 2027 and then to take a pause of 36 years before climbing the last the two steps of the podium within a couple of years. China which has already the largest economy in PPP terms should start seeing Uncle Sam in its mirror in 2056 and stay in the top position for nine years. Before Tianzhu reclaims the spot it held during 85% of the last 2,000 years.

A Polling Station Atop Mont Blanc, Almost

At 15,256 feet the one in Tashigang, Himachal Pradesh is now the world's highest and only 521 feet shy of the Franco-Italian roof but 856 feet higher than nearby Hikkim, the previous record-holder. One of over a million polling stations it has been set up for any of the 48 people that are allowed to vote there on May 19, the last of seven days of voting in the 2019 Indian general election. But it will not be as exclusive as the one erected in a remote Gujarati forest solely for Mahant Darshandas.

There will be an extra 85 million eligible voters -- roughly the population of Germany -- bringing the total to 900 million who will be tasked to elect 543 MPs in as many single-member constituencies (SMCs). 543 is unchanged from 5 years earlier -- our local political bonobos should take good note. India will have to wait for the 2029 election to cross the billion-voter mark. By that time she would have just overtaken China as the most populous country on spaceship Earth.

Voting starts today. Results will be proclaimed on May 23.

Rio Olympics Are Excuse To Watch Gisele Walk

Now that's done, see you in Tokyo in four years.

Wait. There's plenty else to see. Like Kohei Uchimura -- regarded by many as the greatest gymnast of all time -- tonight at 23h00 in the men's individual all-around. Nadia told FT how perfect Kohei was: you can't see any flaws even in slow-motion. Then there's that giant from Jamaica -- and the world's favourite -- who has trouble decelerating in the sprints. He didn't go watch Ms. Bundchen at the Maracana preferring to save his energy to let his races do the talking. Mr. Bolt will turn 30 the day these 31st Olympics end.

The Selecao will also try to do better than grabbing silver for the fourth time. That's not looking too good after two scoreless draws against South Africa and Irak. But a lot of the most memorable experiences will come from athletes we've never heard before. They will dazzle us with their craft. It will not matter which country they are from. We will instantly become one of their fans. Especially if the contests are tight. As many have been already.

The US is ahead in the medal count. Right in front of China. And Hungary. But we've barely started. And there's so much stuff to watch. Including Vinicius and Tom.

Chinese Economy World's Largest, For 50 Years

After which it could be India's turn to grab the top spot. If we extrapolate the assumptions used in one article which appeared some four years ago. Of course forecasting over such long periods is usually fraught with errors. But that doesn't look too outlandish when we remember the size of the economy of 1960 China. Besides India had the world's largest economy for 1,700 of the past 2,000 years. And Lonely Planet reminds us that Pataliputra with a circumference of 33.8km was spaceship Earth's biggest city of the Mauryan empire. 2,500 years ago.

One bet looks safer than others. It's going to be Chindia for a long time. Which makes it all the more necessary for the two giants to sort out the problems on their 2,100-mile border.

So, Where is Flight MH370?

Tomorrow it's going to be a week since the plane stopped responding. A massive international search and rescue operation -- including repositioned Chinese satellites -- hasn't really brought any answers to the families of the 239 people that were on board.

This reminded me of the time when a plane on which my dad was travelling was hijacked. When he returned safely I eventually went up to him to ask how it all went. I was especially curious because I had been told the story of the daring raid at Entebbe before and had found it amazing.

Yeah, so he told me it went ok. That he negotiated with the hijackers and pleaded for stuff some of the women needed or whatever. Our local newspapers carried the story.

India Welcomes Back Friend As Chinese Premier

Li Keqiang is back in India today after 27 years for a 3-day visit. This is his first overseas trip as Chinese PM. Which is happening a few days after the standoff in Ladakh ended peacefully.

He will be meeting the Indian PM for talks on a wide-ranging number of issues. Including border claims and dams that the Middle Empire wants to build on the Brahmaputra.

China Not In A Hurry To Bailout Europe

Listen to this very interesting interview of Jin Liqun, Chairman of the China Investment Corporation. Where he is essentially saying that Europe is not sustainable as it is.

China Giving More Loans To Africa

Than the World Bank. I heard Stephen Sackur mention this yesterday on Hardtalk. He was grilling Obi Ezekwisili the Bretton Woods institution's VP for Africa. The latter said something interesting: inequality is a time bomb that destroys your society. Couldn't agree more. Which has been after all the basic trigger for the Arab Spring. That would explain why The House of Saud is spending USD130 billion to buy peace in the Kingdom.

Here too, bean-counting policies have seriously harmed the fabric of our society during the last five years. For some thoughts on this check our little multimedia collection. No subscriptions required.

Beijing To Let Yuan Appreciate Mildly

That's what the Chinese authorities are expected to announce in the next few days. The move to a more flexible currency is being contemplated for at least two reasons: fighting inflation and making the average Chinese richer.

Won't this mean a less competitive China? Nope because the Middle Kingdom has secured other sources of competitiveness: better infrastructure.

Will our cry babies learn anything from this? Aren't you asking too much?

Why China is Unlikely To Use Mauritius As a Base to Hop Into Africa

I'll give you three reasons. The first one is because it's already everywhere in Africa and has been absolutely irreverent in not waiting for the go-ahead from the bean-counter. Google about it when you have two secs. The second one is geography. Africa is not very far from China and that has not changed for a good many years if you ask me. Besides we're only the 15th busiest airport in Africa as far as passenger traffic goes (Tunisia has two airports ranked at 10th and 11th places) while Singapore and Dubai have the 11th and 13th busiest airport by cargo traffic in the World. Finally, we are stuck with the dumbest government in our history which also has more than a little penchant for cronyism.

Hu is Going to Be Missed?

Am gonna miss the Chinese President for at least one reason: he reduced traffic on our roads to levels not seen in ages. And he did that for two straight days. Simply awesome! What I don't understand is why Navin didn't offer him to stay in Mauritius forever.

It's true there is another solution to our severe traffic problems: provide a pair of escort motorcycles to each motorist.
