Eski CEB Fer Lekonomi Ek Ban Kontra IPP?

Blog Different is Nine

Which means we'll be double-digits in exactly twelve months. But we'll hit the 1,500th post and 5,000th comment well before that. And probably end up 2017 with at least 100 posts. Something that hasn't happened since 2012. No shortage of things to write on. Might even break the record of 10 posts in a year here.

Watch out for stuff on...

10 Years of Blogging

Completed yesterday. The first post was a note on a statement -- Setting the Stage For Robust Growth  -- made by the then Minister of Finance. The whole thing actually started a short while after a friend did two things: she first asked me why I didn't blog -- given that I was so opinionated -- and then provided me with the url for a couple of blogging services. I eventually settled for blogger and wrote a few relatively long pieces on The Jag!.

As these -- which were essentially a series of short posts combined together -- were taking way too long to my liking I eventually set up Kozelidir with a couple of friends for shorter ones. All kinds of strict guidelines were enforced and these did cause some friction leading some of the initial collaborators to eventually set up their own blogs. Some who were invited never contributed anything and eventually confessed that 'pa fasil sa nivo angle la'.

Many of the posts were also published in the Forum page of Le Mauricien: who said that journalists can't have good taste? Or be addicted to writing that's not too poor?

It's been a lot of work. But definitely a lot of fun too. And the learning has never stopped.

Stay tuned for more!

Kozelidir Turns 007

Yep, it's 7 years since we published our first post. 1,272 have appeared since then -- this one included. Along with 4,142 comments. August 23, by the way, is the date when Mount Vesuvius started rumbling and eventually destroyed Pompeii. It is also the start of the battle of Stalingrad: one very bloody war.

It's been a lot fun blogging in here. And reading your comments. Which have helped to connect a lot of interesting dots.

Mauritian FB Pages With The Most Likes

I googled but didn't find any lists. But it's not difficult to get a rough idea:

Air Mauritius: 520,672; L'express: 207,879; Lux* Island Resorts: 123,358; MCB: 104,479; Beachcomber: 72,249; Defimedia Group: 45,843; PMSD: 31,432; ION News: 31,348; SBM: 30,213; MMM: 30,172; Parti Malin: 27,975; Mauritius Labour Party: 27,825; Courts: 25, 268; Le Mauricien: 18,863; Flying Dodo Brewing Company: 13,670; J Kalachand: 5,474; MSM: 5,055; MPCB: 2,710; Le Matinal: 1,564; Kozelidir: 288 (Yahoo!); Conserverie Sarjua: 177.

So the PMSD and Party Malin have more likes than the Labour Party. I guess these two parties will win by a landslide in the next general elections. MK looks like it will be the first company to hit a million likes. When you deal with more than 1 million passengers every year surely it's no big surprise that you are right on the top here. But likes don't necessarily mean a lot as people like pages for all kinds of reasons. And page administrators don't all do as good a job.

Meet A 6-year Old

Yep, it's August 23 today so Kozelidir is one year smarter. We've reached 1,182 posts and nearly 3,700 comments. But as you may have noticed the pace of the posts and comments has slowed down for essentially two reasons. First let us look at posts.

I have a lot less time to blog here -- which would explain that only 45 posts have been published so far this year -- and because I had to resume writing more meatier stuff on the crucially important topic of electoral reform on The Jag! I already wrote 5 posts in 2014 there or 50% the total number of posts published between 2005 and 2008. That's been a lot of work but more should appear there soon.

Comments also flow in less often because those there already cover most of the interesting angles of the relevant posts. So there is little to add. People that are new to Kozelidir might also be intimidated by the quality of the discussion that takes place here. So they shy away.

See you in here!

Kozelidir Person of The Year 2013

Attributed to Jacques Verges for teaching us why monsters should be thoroughly understood. And to Nelson Mandela for running South Africa from prison.

Civil Service Hostage of Finance Ministry

So says union boss Rashid Imrith. He reminded us that one Audit report mentioned that less than half of the occupational health and safety inspections were carried out. And that one Minister blamed the Ministry of Finance for not being able to operate his Ministry normally.

This is not exactly new stuff. Ministers between 2005 and 2010 have personally told me that Sithanen kept babbling a pair of words: pena kas. And now the CWA has started applying cuts again. Which gives us an idea of the credibility of the so-called reforms.

Imrith has also given XLD one week to meet with union leaders. Before they make a statement to the Police.

Btw, don't forget to send your best wishes.

Kozelidir is 4

Just found out that August 23rd is remembrance day for the slave trade. What a coincidence because on the same date four years ago the first post of Kozelidir made its way to the blogosphere. We crossed another milestone today: we reached our 1,000th post a few hours ago. 3,232 comments have also been published. Some are longer than most of the posts here. We put a premium on brevity. And a big one on insight value. A few comments have been rejected mostly because they were off-topic.

Where do we go from here? There are a lot of conversations here that need to be brought to the surface. So expect an even simpler experience when you visit. And more posts and comments. That hopefully will sharpen the way you look at things.

Thank you for stopping by.

Coca-Cola Brand Value is Twice Apple's

According to Interbrand's 2011 report which calculates this as a combination of financial performance, role of brand and brand strength. Brand Z has a different story though: it puts Apple in the number one spot ahead of Google. And the sugared water brand is deemed to have less than half the value of the brand from Cupertino.

I am really surprised I didn't find Kozelidir in these two rankings.

Kozelidir Turns 3

Yep, 3 years ago we guessed that SAJ would not be getting a second mandate as President because Navin Ramgoolam would prevent Sithanen from closing the few windows of opportunity that were still available in August 2008. Well, how could we know that the PM likes to operate with all the windows shut? I even wonder whether he has noticed they are not opened.

That of course didn't prevent us from looking at a number of issues that affect the lives of the people of Mauritius. We have now reached 763 posts and the 2,700th comment should arrive in the next little while. I never thought we'd grow that big that quick. Now I get the feeling we're just warming up.

Thank you for the wonderful conversations!

Go Kozelidir! Go!

Kozelidir Breaks Through 2,500-Comment Barrier

So I have to say a big thank you to the fans of this blog for the conversation.

Do I have to issue a little note as to what kind of comments don't get through? Nah, you have a pretty large sample here to figure out the DNA of this blog.

And as far as posts go this one is number 729. Which makes reading the guide an interesting stop for many. I have also cleaned up some of the labels so that the experience becomes still better. Here is one sexy baby: all the charts on Kozelidir.

Yahoooooooooooooooooooo!
