Huxley has had an interesting influence on the world through his writings and the people who pushed in the same direction like Tim Leary, Ram Dass and later Steve Jobs. And 60 years ago today he left this world hours after Laura had acceded to his written request for a 100 microgram injection of LSD. The timing of his departure was not exactly extraordinary given what had happened a bit earlier in Dallas.

Socks For Laura
That's what Ram Dass is showing to the amused audience which is there to listen to his remarks in honour of the late Aldous Huxley, the author of the dystopian novel Brave New World. Mr. Huxley was so good with words I heard Alan Watts say that mescaline was given to him so he could give the best description of the effects of the mind-altering drug – the result was Doors of Perception. I haven't read any books by AH but I was blown away by his description of the Nataraj. That was given in 1961 when he had already been diagnosed with laryngeal cancer.

Remembering the Harvard Psychologist Who Taught Millions Where to Be
The American returned to the US and a few years later published Be Here Now (pictured above) which has sold over 2 million copies since 1971. It is a book which influenced many people including the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs who travelled to India to try to duplicate RD’s experience.
What made Ram Dass special is not only that he combed through a massive amount of spiritual literature, tried a vast range of meditative practices and delivered loving-kindness in unusual locations but also that he explained so well what he had learned and experienced. His self-deprecating sense of humour makes listening to RD even more pleasant.
He died in Maui, Hawaii exactly a year ago. His life journey has important policy implications.
