We did a terrific job planning and implementing things at least between 1968-82. We should be thankful to our excellent constitution and FPTP system which have provided the stability necessary to have a fair chance of being a lot more than a country without a future.

Things have deteriorated significantly as from 2005 when a flat tax was introduced using three lies. This has caused everything to slow down and attracted the wrong FDI and people. Poverty and inequality have increased tremendously. The other big risk we're facing now is that there are attempts to turn our Republic into an autocracy with undemocratic devices such as a second republic, party lists and double candidacies.

That's how much of the precious liquid Phase 2 of the Midlands Dam would have been holding these days if it had been built during Mamou (Chacha being already taken) Ramgoolam's second mandate.

How do I arrive at this? Simple. Given that Midlands Dam was 83.2% full on April 5th, it's not too much of a stretch to assume that its Phase 2 would have clipped a similar water level. At a capacity of 17 million m3 that translates to 14.1 million m3 or 13% more than the water currently in our 125-year old Mare aux Vacoas.

Why was Phase 2 not built? Guess that's what happens when you entrust critical economic positions to a toxic bean-counting duet.

Planning Maverick Barely Recognisable

Mauritius reduced average fertility rate from 6 to 3 in 10 short years starting in 1963. This essentially saved us from swinging into chaos given how we were to be buffeted by a naughty string of island-sinking events afterwards. We added free education between the first two oil shocks to make sure our greatest asset would help fuel a strong rebound once sunnier economic skies returned.

In 2010 the world economy rebounded without us while this year our output could be down by several billions because we failed to hold a bit more of all the rain we get in a typical year. Mauritius instead borrowed heavily to create a lot of social injustice and to boast a low-tax high-stupidity regime.

Maybe that's because the Labour Party is itself barely recognisable.
