The first time I heard about him was when I saw my dad showing a couple of the books of the great economist to some people in his study – which also served as living room. I was probably watching Spiderman – thank you Stan Lee – but kept an eye on what they were doing. You know just in case the massive personal library did have some cartoon books somewhere. It looked like he was a fan. How could he not be? They were both curious writers, sharp observers, had designed policies and even spent a fair amount of time in India.

I think the first JKG book I read from cover to cover was The Great Crash and funnily enough I read it in 1987 a year in which the Dow Jones collapsed by 508 points in a single day. It didn't take long to like the guy and learn plenty of stuff. For example it is in one of his books that I learned that we owe the sentence the survival of the fittest not to Charles Darwin but to Herbert Spencer. Elsewhere that trickle-down economics aka supply-side economics was in fact the horse and sparrow theory of the 1890s. It was obvious that Ken had read an extremely large amount of stuff. And it is important to read him to get the big picture, avoid groupthink and develop enough of self-preserving wit.

A bit like his 2005 promise that a flat tax would generate average robust growth rates of 8% forever after: 2015 will be the 5th consecutive year growth rates will be less than half of that.

Besides PR is so unLabour: Phillippe Rozemont was expelled from the Labour Party when he voted in favour of it. And roughly six decades later Navin Ramgoolam lost power and his seat after he flirted with PR. When an overwhelming number of Mauritians -- using an attractive feature of our wonderful FPTP system but one that Sithanen wants to get rid of with party lists -- said no to an electoral proposal that is vote wise and outcome foolish. There is no need to use a bazooka to get rid of a very mild headache.

Seeneevassen Was Fierce Opponent of PR

About sixty years ago -- according to Chit Dhukira's Experiments in Democracy -- the Labour Party, Sookdeo Bissoondoyal and other progressive individuals were dead against proportional presentation as proposed by the Secretary of State for the colonies. There was even a "Down with PR" campaign in the Mauritius Times. And the main speaker of the LP inside and outside of the legislature was none other than Renganaden Seeneevassen. The executive committee of Labour even expelled one Philippe Rozemont -- Guy's brother -- after he voted for PR. Isn't that interesting?

It gets even better when you learn that there was a by-election in 1956 after Guy Rozemont passed away and the campaign revolved around PR. Which the Labour Party won.

Now, isn't that funny that these days the current leader of the LP is promoting PR? Still believing he is a Labourite or a socialist?
