Of The 2.3 Million Americans That Had A Suicide Plan in 2008 39% Executed It

But as many as 8.3 million yankees thought about ending their lives in that year. This is according to a first-of-a-kind study released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Young adults (18-25 years) were 3 times more likely to commit suicide than those over 50. People experiencing substance abuse disorders were also 3 times more at risk than those not having these disorders. And female adults thought slightly more about killing themselves than their male counterparts.

Mauritius had the 46th worst suicide rate out of 108 countries. Singapore was at 47th, Brazil 75th, Jamaica 99th, France was at 18th, India at 44th, America was 41th while Haiti had the smallest rate.

It's good to let us know what's going on in the USA and ask us to comment but what's going on in our prisons? I feel thet the foreign Commissionner of Prisons has failed lamentably in his duty to administer our prisons efficiently and for this reason alone he should be asked to submit his resignation.

In the top 20, there are not less than 12 (Lithuania, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, Ukraine, Hungary, Latvia, Slovenia, Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Estonia) from Eastern Europe countries / from the former Soviet block... Three quarters of these top 20 countries are European. Does the lack of sunlight coupled with dim economic prospects / low GDP per capita drive people to this sad end?
The Suicide rates map also shows that no data exists for most continental African countries - not even the Bafana-bafana! Is it because, like in Mr Ahmadinejab's homosexual-free Iran, there is actually NO suicide in these Affrican countries?

@anonymous: it looks like there have been errors made at multiple levels at the prison. Let's get all the facts first and get the commissioner to tell his side of the story before applying the hatchet.

@akagugo: sunlight is probably one factor just like GDP per capita but it is probably a more complex phenomenon (sun-trapped Danemark has the same rate as us -- maybe they compensate by money the hours of sunlight they don't' get?). RSA is not on the map but it's at 23 in the table.

A suicide case that doesn't convince the family of the departed: he would have drank poison before throwing himself off into Basin Blanc.

Statistics Mauritius must have a report on this. Check their website.
