That was on Saturday at the May 1st rally of the MMM in Port-Louis. This stunned the whole nation because we don't expect a former President to go back to partisan politics. And that's all the more surprising because Cassam told us about a month ago that he had finally understood why he shouldn't stoop that low.
He was also very happy to tell a crowd of "several hundreds of thousands of people" (L'express which is a little more than a loudspeaker of the MMM has estimated the crowd at 18,000 to 20,000 people) that we have to be careful and make the right choice (that is vote for his old party the MMM) to avoid Mauritius from becoming a dictatorship.
Looks like the judgement of the former President has become seriously impaired because a few weeks back he was trying to broker an alliance between the MMM and the Labour Party.
Well, maybe not if Ramgoolam has transformed himself into a little Hitler in the meantime.

Thanks. I was not aware of that. You're right. he could have said that later after he steps down. Times look as if a new modern party will have to step up. I personally see Labour out after the take-over by the Jugnauth dynasty. Will young people like you dare to start something? That will also depend on the outcome of these elections, no doubt. The hardcore needed for that is here. The political, economic and financial knowhow as well as the media and communications resources needed for such a task is here as well. There is need for a leader to step up genuinely.
L'ancien président de la république n'est pas apparu comme un partisan du MMM. C'est la toute la différence. Il est venu comme un citoyen qui a exprimé son mécontentement avec le régime travailliste.Bien sûr, tout est une question d'interprétation. Prenons un exemple digne d'etre cité. Le père Jocelyn Grégoire a fait une causerie. Il n'a a aucun moment donné de mot d'ordre. Il y a eu des réflexions qui de par leur nature sont défavorables à l'alliance de l'avenir. Cela veut-il donc dire qu'il est partisan pour l'alliance XY? Il a le droit en tant que citoyen d'exprimer son opinion à l'ile Maurice. C'est un droit fondamental qui est ancré dans notre constitution, notre loi suprême. J'encourage tous les gens à faire pareil.

Uteem is not an ordinary citizen. He has been our President for ten years and we were looking up to him as someone above party politics.
It is so sad that he has fallen so low.

Talking about dynasties... Uteem Sr. was touted as no 3. of an MMM government not so long ago. Given the uproar caused by this he had to pull back and this position has now gone to Uteem Jr.
The latter has a better government ranking than Lutchmeenaraidoo who has been a very good Finance Minister.
Week-end tried a last time to influence the vote by having Sithanen and Berenger in their paper on Sunday.
