Kozelidir's Free Guide To Abolition of Private Tuition

Given that primary teachers are saying that the raison-d'etre for private tuition is a heavy curriculum kids can spend their afternoon doing all kinds of fun stuff if we lighten what they have to be taught. This can be done in two ways:

1. Get the grown-ups who design the curriculum to chop off enough material that will set our kids free after 14h30. We may be told that this is a complicated process that will take years and that teachers cannot possibly work faster than Prime Ministers promising more decent electricity prices. Fair enough. That's why we have an alternative solution.

2. Get a bunch of down-to-earth kids to tear off material they found absolutely boring in their preceding school year. That shouldn't take more than a couple of days.

Please make sure to check our other guides here including the very popular Kozelidir's Free Guide to a Successful Ministerial Resignation.

Mansoor Doubles Foreign Debt in 3 Short Years

By guzzling an extra Rs9 billion. This makes Mauritius more vulnerable and is inconsistent with slogans like 'reforms have saved the economy'. And that's definitely something Africa doesn't want to copy.

Flat Tax Spins Public Finances Out of Control

That's because the robust growth rates that were needed to sustain the 15% flat tax of Dr. KonnTu and his Bretton-Woods-minted charge nurse never arrived. See, as fiscal receipts depend on growth rates and effective tax rates you can only slash the latter if the former are much higher. Otherwise there won't be any money to solve important national problems or debt levels will spin out of control. A flat-tax also brutally increases the divide between the haves and have-nots.

Unsurprisingly Ministers of the last government have said in private that they were consistently told that there was no money to do anything right from the beginning. So nothing much was done and Mauritius in 2010 is a less competitive place than it was back in July 2005. People have also become poorer and many have lost faith in the future of their country and in their own.

Given that Mauritius will not see any robust growth rates anytime soon matters will get worse and beyond any political repair. Which is why Pravind Jugnauth has to present a new budget. Right away.

Let's Make Money

That's the title of the 2008 movie produced by an Austrian filmmaker Erwin Wagenhofer playing on Canal+ these days. I watched parts of it including a segment by Economic Hit Man John Perkins which reminded me of Naomi Klein. Perkins published an interesting book in 2005 which is available from Amazon for less than $11. And you can start listening to the hour-long confession of the hit man too.

Goldman Sachs To Pay Half A Billion To Settle Case With SEC

But will admit no wrongdoing in the case that was filed against it by the securities watchdog back in April. Instead it has agreed that the marketing material related to one of its subprime mortgage investment product was incomplete.

Its stock rose after the settlement was announced indicating that the market was expecting a less favourable outcome.

World To Grow Faster Than Dodoland in 2010

The IMF is now forecasting the world output to expand at 4.6% instead of its April forecast of 4.2%. So things are getting better overall across the world. Except in Mauritius where growth forecasts have been revised downwards from 4.6% to 4.1%. That after receiving record amounts of FDI for 4 straight years.

Are you surprised? I'm not. Have been sounding the alarm bell for a while now.

Win Rs60,000 By Explaining Where The Repo Rate Should Be

I just saw that the Central Bank was organising a monetary policy challenge. You need to team up with three people and submit your analysis no later than August 16.

That's an interesting initiative from the bank's Financial Literacy Committee to raise the level of debate surrounding monetary policy. In fact it's the fourth edition of that challenge. I don't understand how I missed that. Anyway here's last year's winners.

I wonder if Mr. Berenger will participate. He could indeed team up with let's say Ganoo, Cuttaree and Bhagwan.

40% of Poll Think Brazil Will Win The World Cup

Well, that was before they lost to Holland. 3 out of the 22 voters thought Spain would win it while only 1 person was betting Sneijder's side will grab the trophy tonight. Let's see.

Club of World Cup Winning Nations To Welcome New Member Tonight

Spain or Holland will be only the eighth country to join this select club after Uruguay, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England, Argentina and France. But first Shakira will set Soccer City on fire and 22 players will showcase Total Football hopefully before Madiba presents the trophy to the champs.

Can Businesspeople Be Great Economists?

Not necessarily argues Paul Krugman in a classic HBR article. Just like training in economics won't make you run your business better. He blames styles of thinking that are not transferable from one field to the other and the fact that economic systems are closed systems whereas business ones are open.

Anyone believing the opposite is true, Paul says, may be afflicted by what is known as the great man's disease: people don't understand that they must equip themselves with new tools and a new vocabulary before being able to make pronouncements in another field that will not be laughed at.

I couldn't agree more. For instance would you trust me doing some morning brain surgery on you?

Really? Let me grab a scalpel then.

Two-time Champs Meet Two-time Runners-up

Uruguay and Holland will both try to clinch their third ticket to a World Cup Final in Sunday's fiesta at Soccer City. Difficult to say who will win when we look back at the hair-raising quarter-finals when Gyan's penalty hit the woodwork. Or when remember how a brilliant selecao collapsed in 15 short minutes and were rather unrecognisable from then on.

Germany looks pretty good on paper after having thrashed England and other big favourite Argentina. But this is the World Cup and you just never know. For sure if you wait for the ball to come to your feet like Christiano Ronaldo did then for sure it makes sense that you have already gone home. Just like Dunga was absolutely right to leave Ronaldihno and Ronaldo behind.

I got these from here. Thanks Seolid.
