So they stormed into a meeting between our government and the private sector asking that consultations be broadened. Which makes a lot of sense. What doesn't is that our government is apparently getting ready to sign this agreement in a couple of weeks. The civil society too should be invited to participate so Mauritius can get to the bottom of this. And it will not hurt that the media steps in and offers a disinterested perspective of the issue because as matters stand how much do you know about TISA?
Here's a little something to start learning about it.
What does the law say?
ReplyDeleteLet this short video explain this, together with TTP and TTIP, in context.
ReplyDeleteSee, when some countries tried to protect their domestic interests by setting regulations, multinationals have used the reviled ISDS clauses (a discreet dispute settlement mechanism) in-built into these Trade Deals to literally disembowel states. And this alone should have raised alarms, especially for a government elected as a saviour against a coterie of 'profiterr'... Sure, this is fearsome for the sovereignty of our country.
Under TISA, this decision where labour laws are re-defined, clarified and grounded by courts would have been overturned to the benefit of investors. See where Dodoland is heading? Mrs Collen warning about some direct control over everything could be chillingly right and will sadly and woefully be ignored by local government bureacrats...
