72% of Survey Say They Are Not Better Off Now

Than they were in 2005. I don't think anyone is surprised by this.

  1. I am surprised about the 28.1% of people who now are better off than 5 years ago: did they col-lafiss pou Navin, or were they employed by Rama to count the beans and get paid piecework for that? Or did they import Subutex and get VIP access to the airport lounge? Did they get paid for keeping their buses parked while keeping students and pensionners waiting for their buses? Did they get a right to exploit some islet off Mauritian coasts and rip-off tourists setting foot there? Did they get a catering contract for MBC staff? Did they get the contract for re-laying a redundant layer of asphalt on the road where I live yesterday night? 28.1% better off, I'm flabergasted!

  2. Yep akagugo, 28.1% is definitely on the high side. And you're spot on for those who've seen their lives improve.

  3. How many respondents to your survey? Are they representative of the mtian population?
It seems that only some ppl visit this site, and most are ppl who know you!
What's the point of "tire grand conclusion" with such petty surveys?

  4. There were 32 participants in this survey which was our first. It's obvious that it's not a stratified sample but that doesn't mean that it's not representative of the Mauritian population. It's a question of how representative it is.

For this particular question I tend to agree with akagugo that the 28.1% is on the high side when we look at what has happened during the past five years. And you will not be faced with a shortage of posts on these issues on this blog.

In any case what's your opinion on the matter?

  5. I do not remember having participated in that particular survey. I personally think the wording was not explicit enough. To be better off does not mean the same thibg to different participants. I personally I am not better off. I lost my job twice during Navin's reign and i am working for less than half what I used to earn. I may be better off with respect to income tax and stress (I work 10 mins from my home) and other things but not in money terms.

  6. @anonymous: survey didn't stay on for long. People usually factor in all kinds of variables when they answer this question. Which is what you are saying by the way.
