MPs Want Answers From Financial Secretary

About the Rs340 million of public funds that were injected into Infinity BPO via Sithanen's infamous stimulus package. See, BPO is a growth industry so technically it should be the last quarters from which request for government aid should have come from.

Which would explain why MP Deerpalsing has asked, albeit belatedly, for the monitoring committee of the ASP to explain how they've been... monitoring these significant public monies that were apparently invested to save... jobs.

Ali Mansoor, Amedee Darga, Rama Sithanen, Navin Ramgoolam, Jean Suzanne, and other officials from the Ministry of Finance and all others concerned should be sent on exile - Diego Garcia will be a good place......they could entertain the US Marines there!

In any decent democracy the government would have fallen down with such a crisis! I am sad I live here!

Should we ask Prof. Joseph Stiglitz about it?

Gulliver's Travel describes exotic worlds unheard of.Pity we cannot wind back time, Mauritius would have served as a perfect case for that book - an isolated island where the lunatics run the asylum!!

After SAJ and Paul Berenger made the Medpoint deal, one of their fundamental arguments was that Ramgoolam was a champion in wasting public funds - remember he used to go abroad almost twice every month? PJ then in his meetings would say ' Moi mo pas un bilawan moi'(Bhojpuri term ....I won't waste public funds), and would stress on how much Ramgoolam had wasted on all that......and in fact he was right – remember the 40 million Rs on celebrating independence, useless overseas trips, Sega in Davos, team of advisors called Policy Unit ...............

PJ was so right!!! Navin Ramgoolam is just like that - no respect for public money AT ALL! Hence his silence! But now PJ seems to have learned a few d...... tricks from Ramgoolam, a potent contagion process going on there I must say, worst than the Ebola virus. What a mess we are in! And it seems politics will now never get any better on this island, the political parties are too undemocratic themselves.

Yeah one should ask the Prof because his deep research interests are - Mauritius, Stimulus Packages and Diego Garcia, one can't find a better expert than him, lol. Can't believe someone like him, with the interest to please because he got paid well here, wrote such a thing published in 2 newspapers overseas. Money can buy almost anything now, even ridiculously biased experts! But it might not be his fault at all- who knows what Darga and that man who organised his trip here told him about Mauritius? They must have given him one of those Hotel or Air-Mauritius in-flight magazine guides on Mauritius accompanied with a relaxing CD. This could be a good story plot for a Simpsons episode – Nobel eco Prof goes to an exotic island.

The comments from this "poll" about Nita's opposition-backed intervention are quite enlightening: there is a significant proportion of people who are satisfied with Nita's (belated) stance... Another significant portion of those commenting also rightly find that all of this must have had the consent of Navin himself at the time the money was being dished out. Now, (when) will JCDL come forward to defend Ali and Rama with his hard-earned medals?

Tassarajen Chedumbrum Pillay, the IT Super Minister, says we should stop talking about this(Infinity scandal) now!

Wise man he is with selective amnesia.

If this was happening in France, UK or any other EU country we would have had the television station interview a member of the opposition - a shadow Finance Minister and or any other expert who would have told us how grave this mismanagement of public funds is.

Its high time someone took the govt to court for not allowing us to have private TV stations - the world has changed now, I wonder what the law lords would have to say to this if the case goes to the privy council! I'm not sure they would have pity on Ramgoolam to let him control the media like this!

Nita says(l'express interview Radio one, today), according to her sources, the govt has recuperated its investment from Infinity BPO.Kind of weird to hear this from her since she complained about the failure of the company helped by public funds....implicitly saying that the money went down to the drains!

Which is which?

Will PJ tell us more about it?

I do not understand my uncle Kee Chong: he surprised everybody when he asked not so loong ago that Mansoor be given another important job. Now he wants Mansoor out. He changes his stands quite often. Paul B. must have a good rotin bazar.

The extract below is from DWM - democracy watch Mauritius

http://dwmauritius.info/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=44&Itemid=3

The had this opinion published when they found out that Rama will be out!And they talk about performance too, I wonder what they think now about Rama's right-hand man Mansoor whom they will surely place on the same pedestal as Rama

Extract:

'Tout les sages de Maurice(et il y en a beaucoup dans notre population) voient le re-investiture d’un député (de surcroît un Ministre des Finances infatigable pendant 5 ans) être base sur sa performance et ses résultats et pas du tout sur les préférences ou animosité d’ un autre député. Et ou se situe la qualité de loyauté du leader de son parti (le PTr) s’il acceptai un tel marchandage ? Ou va-t-on de ce pas ?'

The clowns at DWM (btw, it is written with the same letters as the acronym for Weapons of Mass Destruction...) must have been taken quite aback when Rama S. failed to even win a ticket in last year's elections because the last time they updated their website was 7.4.10. Food for thought is not it?

For sure Ali needs to be put on the same pedestal where R.S. was although we now know it has an ejectable seat. ROFL.

The clowns at DWM have interesting profiles ; ex vive president, ex MEF president, retired journalist loyal to past president canvassing for the post to be kept well and alive......

Leave Mansoor alone,lol said...

Undue and unfair emphasis is being placed on Mansoor here, we still don't know the names of those who were supposed to supervise all this once the money was given away but it seems, as heard on the TV, that the person with the most important responsibility in allocating these funds was Mr Darga himself.

Please don't blame people when when you don't have the fine details, for now you would do well in talking about Darga - he was everywhere in this together with the JEC smiling man!

You are wrong in targeting Mansoor, he might be all clean after all.

@leave... : Mansoor was member of the board which was involved in a multi-billion rupee hedging loss (MK). I still recall how he was branded as someone with skills that no other Mauritian had by his freindo who gave him the FS job... looks as if those skills could not stop the catastrophe.

The Minister of Finance intervenes when it pleases him in the affairs of the STC (PJ reducing petrol prices by two rupees and RS changing the formula for the APM in the third quarter of 2008). The FS could not not be aware of the derivatives that we are told are responsible for a 5 billion rupee loss. Hmm, his 'rare' skills did not prevent this either.

The FS is a very powerful person as this ad for a admin/manager of his office reminds us.

His friendo was also booted out NR's candidate list if I remember correctly.

The MOF has also released a Financial Management Kit in January 2011 to replace the Financial Management Manual. You can start by reading volume 1: Duties and Responsibilities in Management of Public Finance. Hahahaha.

Leave Mansoor alone,lol said...

You are right.See, you didn't and couldn't make any reference to infinity BPO which was what I was talking about.

why the hahahahaha then?

Cant you see Ramgoolam is scared of darga and cant say a word about this man's failure - we still need to know the qualifications of Darga who has handled billions under the various Empowern.. and stimulus deals

akagugo said...

Nita's interview. Clear-cut, as usual.

AMM has been a huge failure as FS just like the former FM who handed him the job.

He counts pennies with the PBB but authorises hundred of millions to Infinity BPO. He should be taken to task and fired for incompetence.

Sanjay Jagatsingh said...

Here's one way the US monitored the funds it lent to General Motors and to Chrysler.

The FS should have objected Infinity getting any help out of public funds because it does not make sense to help the flagship company of a booming industry. But even before this Mauritius did not need a stimulus package in the first place because our economy's problems had little to do with the great recession.

Bhai Mansoor came to Mauritius after he was dazzled by the lofty vision of his friend Bhai Sithanen whom he regards as one of the smartest economist he has met (Methink that Bhai Ali should try to meet more people).

Considering that neither his friend nor his friend's vision are there anymore what is he waiting to lev pake???

Maybe he's waiting for a premature termination of his contract and the associated golden handshake... Who knows?

Miss Najma said...

Mansoor left a well paid job to serve the country, he gets paid a low salary here in comparison, so please respect him.

Sanjay Jagatsingh said...

@Miss Najma: I think as FS he gets something like Rs500,000 per month which translates into USD200,000 per year. That's no small earnings you will agree especially in a country where some people have to survive on 100 times less. You will be interested to know that the World Bank President's salary in 2007 was USD421,000 so what AM is making here compares favourably.

Having said that when someone fails he should be fired irrespective of how much he makes per month. Or should only the little people be taken to task?

Someone is allegedly terrorizing an officer at the MOF. I saw that in L'express and there is a lawsuit too.

Dear Sir,

S. Gobine today writes that "Seulement, Desveaux (Jean-Mee) était un technicien hautement qualifié, un conseiller d’une compétence exceptionnelle."

I know Mr. Desveaux was PRB's right hand man but cannot remember him as the person Gobine is trying to portray. It is a fact that S. Gobine once asked "how many Bheenick does it take to make 1 Sithanen? 100?".

Is it true that S. Gobine used to be in the MMM?

I read somewhere on Defi Plus Website that Navin Ramgoolam is more intelligent than his fatther as he uses electronic media as FB, Twitter etc compared to thousands of agents that had to wear red T-shirts in SSR's l'epoque.

Not only SSR sold Diego but he did not even understand how to use a computer. What a total loss!
